Slowly, he reached up and brushed a finger along the edge of Stephen’s own black eye. “You shouldn’t have antagonized them. You almost got yourself shot.”

Stephen’s hand clenched where it was resting on Michael’s shoulder. He started to voice a retort, something along the lines of Pot, meet Kettle, but Michael leaned forward to closed the distance between them, pressing his lips to Stephen’s in a chaste but firm kiss.

Stephen froze, not knowing what to think. It lingered for a moment, then Michael drew back slightly, hand cupping Stephen’s cheek. They regarded one another in the dim light, each waiting for the other to move, to speak. Michael leaned in again, slower this time, waiting for Stephen to pull away. Instead Stephen met him half way, deepening the kiss, surprised with himself and how much he wanted it. Michael was warm and alive beneath his hands, and it felt so good. His tongue quested out, tasting, and met an unexpected tang on Michael’s lips. Stephen froze, the heat of the encounter doused out of him with bitter realization. He pulled back, his hand firm on Michael’s shoulder keeping him away as he tried to follow.

“You’re drunk.”
