2020 Reading Wrap-Up

justanorthernlightFor 2020 my goal was to read at least 50 books, and I just barely squeaked across the finish line yesterday.
Of the things I read 22 were novels, 21 were comic book trade paperbacks, 5 were short story collections, and 2 were nonfiction.
By genre 29 were Star Wars content (all canon, no Legends this year), 7 were other science fiction, 9 were fantasy, 2 were mystery, 1 was general 'literature', and the two nonfiction books were humor and civics, respectively.
12 were rereads, 38 new to me, and of those 38 11 had been on my towering To Be Read pile for over a calendar year.
I didn't get around to typing up any of my reading notes after about August because 2020 has been a dumpster fire, but the best Star Wars novel I read was surprisingly Phasma by Delilah S. Dawson, which had been sitting at the bottom of my TBR pile since it came out in fall 2017. I
also liked most of the Sequel era comics that I read, particularly the Poe Dameron series and the Age of Resistance one-shots.
On the Non-Star Wars side I liked How To: Absurd Scientific Advice For Common, Real World Problems by Randall Munore (the xkcd guy), Wild Seed by Octavia Butler (although Mind of My Mind and Patternmaster were pretty bland and suffered from a lot of early-novel-ness, and I hated Clay's Ark to a degree I haven't hated a book in years, it was set in 2021 and is about a plague spreading across the Earth, which didn't help my enjoyment at all), and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susannah Clark, which has been sitting on my to be read pile since 2014.
For 2021 my goal is once again 50 books, but I will probably read fewer comics (although I'm still trying to catch up on the SWEU). I have an unusually large number of books sitting on the pile that are the final book in a series I never finished off sitting on the pile. I want to finish those off and I want to read more nonfiction. I'm aiming for 7 this year. We'll see how it goes.
