Oh boy.
I love reading super plotty epic length fic, and I've always wanted to write one. I've tried, and I've tried writing shorter plotty fic to try and build up to it, but I really struggle with advancing plot. Here is an incomplete list of ideas I've started:
The Babylon 5 ranger!Ivanova & still-brainwashed!Garibaldi spy-vs-spy season 4/5 AU: This was a canon divergent AU where instead of letting Garibaldi go in season 4 Bester kept him around as a sort of easily disposable catspaw. As a result, the Earth Alliance civil war went a whole lot worse with massive damage to Earth itself.
Hashing out all of the details here was one of my writing pitfalls, but somewhere along the way Ivanova gets outed as a rogue Telepath and is forced out of Earthforce and joins the Rangers to avoid joining the Psi Corps & to stay involved in the war.
The fic was supposed to pick up about a year and a half after "The Face of the Enemy", with Bester using Garibaldi to investigate the disappearance of high ranking Psi Corps operatives in the Earth Alliance government. ranger!Ivanova runs across him while the Rangers are trying to stop the raiders from season 5, and the plot was supposed to tie into the Drakh stuff
(I don't remember if it's actual canon or just my headcanon but telepaths being able to jam Drakh keepers played a major part, and the Drakh were infiltrating the remains of Earth's government as well, it always bugged me that the Keeper we saw on that Mars Resistance guy never went anywhere...)
Anyways, the plot was supposed to be two mysteries wrapped inside one another, Ivanova finding out about Garibaldi's brainwashing and Garibaldi tracking down the Drakh stuff, and I was going to have Stephen, Lyta, and G'kar teaming up with Ivanova and more of a resolution to Ivanova's telepath arc and some creepy Bester/Garibaldi scenes and plenty of angst and eventually the Drakh plot would be uncovered, Garibaldi would be freed from his brainwashing, and not everything would be sunshine and puppies but there would be some kind of resolution.
(I love Ivanova but the lack of resolution to her telepath plotline has always left me kind of cold and dissatisfied. I could go on at length about it but this is long already.)
Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Mirrorverse AUs: Exactly what is says on the tin? Actually, there's a specific canon divergence that would make the AU for me, that is that Han, Luke, and Leia pick up on Snoke's manipulation of Ben and that leads them to the First Order, and they wind up rescuing a bunch of the child soldiers including Finn, and Finn goes on to train as a Jedi.
Rey, on the other hand, gets kidnapped by the First Order when they're trying to bulk up their troops again and winds up as an intelligence operative. Poe never got over his teenage smuggler phase and is just kind of a criminal asshole (I haven't read the YA novel that covers Poe's smuggler phase, which is one of the reasons I didn't get far in this fic). For reasons both Poe and Rey are trying to steal the Millennium Falcon, and then there's an inter-dimensional rift that transports everyone to the canon universe (sometime between TLJ and TROS) and there's shenanigans with their counterparts.
Other big Star Wars fic I started and never finished were the Jyn Erso/Princess Leia Coruscant rescue/spy romance, the TFA Han dies and time travels to meet pregnant Shmi fic, and the Luke falls to the Dark Side between ESB and ROTJ but still hates the Empire and is on the Rebellion's side fic trilogy (I did post the prologue to this fic, but IDK if I'll ever finish it).
I wrote about the Black Sails/Star Wars fusion I started for challenge #3, I also started a Silver/Flint role reversal AU and a Flint & Billy post-series resolution fic that also flashbacked to Billy's early time on the Walrus crew.
I have ideas for shorter, more doable ideas but I'm just really bad at finishing things. That Babylon 5 fic has been a brainweasel of mine for years, though.

Date: 2022-01-09 04:56 pm (UTC)Part of me wonders whether Ivanova's presence could have salvaged the Byron arc, but probably not. So much of Ivanova's arc is backwards-focused (on her mom's death, her brother's death, her broken relationship with her father), the telepath arc would hopefully have brought it more into the present day, instead we just have sad, dissatisfied Ivanova facing yet another loss during Sleeping in Light and it just makes me sad.
