It's a fair interpretation. I think I just see it all as different aspects of fandom - if I enjoyed the canon, I'm in the fandom, especially if it's something I would go back and enjoy again. Which elements of the fandom I engage with might just vary. I certainly agree that there is canon I love but have never felt particularly fannish about in terms of creating/consuming fanworks (although discussion about the canon is a far more common thing)
