Snowflake Challenge #9

Challenge #9

In your own space, list your Fandom Wrap categories. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Last month, Spotify sent out their yearly “Spotify Wrap” - summary of our listening habits over the past year, divided into categories of “Top 5 __”. We don’t have Spotify’s ‘scientific algorithm’ but we can do what we do best - estimate! These rankings are based on TIME spent on a particular item. If one of these categories doesn't apply to you, feel free to skip. You also don't have to list all 5 or just 5. ^_~

I had to go back through my Ao3 history to get a feel for how I spent last year, especially the earlier parts of it, it feels like a lifetime ago. I did try to give my best estimates based on time, but that's sometimes hard to estimate, particularly for the early parts of the year.

What are your top five fandoms for 2021 based on the amount of time you interacted with them?
1. Star Wars
2. Lord of the Rings
3. Tortall (maybe?)
4. Black Sails
5. Babylon 5

Star Wars and Lord of the Rings might be switched, I did more active participation in Star Wars discussions and read a whole bunch of expanded universe stuff, but definitely read more LOTR fic and made two vids.

I made two Babylon 5 vids and rewatched most of Black Sails, but judging by my Ao3 history I read a whole lot more Tortall fic than I thought, lol. (I also started reading the Beka Cooper series for the first time last year, wow that spring feels like ages ago.)

What are your top five fandom spaces in terms of time spent? (AO3, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, Dreamwidth, and others)
1. Dreamwidth
2. Ao3
3. Reddit (specifically and exclusively r/lotrmemes)
4. Youtube
5. My own bookshelf (this one is cheating but tbh should probably be at the top)

What are the top five ways you interacted in these fandoms? (Reading fanfic, writing, commenting, watching videos, chatting with friends, making art, or anything else you can think of).
1. Participating in [community profile] swbookclub
2. Vidding
3. Watching vids and reading fic
4. Revisiting canon material (reading books, rewatching movies/shows)

I would say that this was not my year for interacting with fandom, but it was actually better than last year, at least until this past summer, lol.

What are the top five things you did to contribute to fandom in terms of time? Did you write? Comment? Send positive energy into the universe? Create art?
1. Participated in [community profile] swbookclub
2. Vidded.
3. upvoted memes on reddit.
4.
5.

This is an area I want to improve on this year.

What things did you create that took the most time?
1. vid: Odds Are
2. vid: She's Not There
3. vid: with no god attached
4. vid: a better place (since you came along)

I only made 4 things this year. In some regards Odds Are should be #3 behind those two B5 vids because I technically started them years ago, but in a practical sense they came together very quickly once the technical hurdles were dealt with. I really struggled with Odds Are and it took me like 4-5 months to finish.

I don't think your bookshelf is cheating at all.

I really am enjoying seeing what people are using for their last list, and it looks like you should be very proud of the vids you created.

My own bookshelf (this one is cheating but tbh should probably be at the top)

Totally not a cheat. Netflix has effectively been a pretty active fandom space for me this year...

It's a fair interpretation. I think I just see it all as different aspects of fandom - if I enjoyed the canon, I'm in the fandom, especially if it's something I would go back and enjoy again. Which elements of the fandom I engage with might just vary. I certainly agree that there is canon I love but have never felt particularly fannish about in terms of creating/consuming fanworks (although discussion about the canon is a far more common thing)

The bookshelf and the library are totally fannish spaces.
