Taking stock
Nov. 11th, 2022 02:42 amThere are 50 days left in 2022, and one of my goals for the year was to complete 4 (full length) vids.
So far I've only completed one (I think I forgot to post it over here, it's If I Ever Do See You Again, an Aragorn/Arwen LOTR vid), so this is me taking stock of my ideas and current WIPs, in hope of some inspiration striking me to actually work on them.
My main viddable media fandoms of late are Star Wars, Black Sails, and Babylon 5, although it's been a while since I've rewatched either Black Sails or B5. I feel like I've forgotten a couple of ideas I've had along the way, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. If I think of them I may come back and add them later.
Star Wars Vid Ideas:
My Star Wars WIPs are currently the easiest to work on because I have most of the movies chopped up into clips. My vidding process involves a lot of trial and error, like trying to fit likely-looking pieces into a jigsaw puzzle, so I like to have a large pool of clips to pull from ahead of time, rather than stopping and hunting around in a whole movie every time I need a particular shot.
Concrete Ideas/Active WIPs:
- A full version of my This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race mini-vid I made for Vexercises, focusing on Palpatine across all 9 saga films (but really focusing on I-III, VI, & IX). This is at the top of my WIP list because I have most of the grunt work of clipping done on it, I just have a little over an hour of TROS left, and it is melodically relatively easy (except for that eternally repeating chorus towards the end, which are the bane of my existence. Filling the extra chorus repeats was, I think, the weakest part of my Odds Are vid last year), and I have the 'rough draft' of my Vexercises vid to guide at least the first verse of a new version.
- An Episodes I-IX + Rogue One vid set to We Will All Go Together When We Go by Tom Lehrer. This idea sprung out of last year's Snowflake Challenge when a discussion on vidding turned into a list of recs of vids set to Lehrer songs. It's kind of morbid, but I also lowkey started it as a criticism of the inability of certain screenwriters to come up with narrative stakes that don't involve the destruction of entire planets
*cough*JJAbrams*coughcough* also look at what Rogue One did by lowering the scale of destruction but going extra personal on the people affected by it!
- A Luke-centric vid set to Wolf Parade's You Are A Runner And I Am My Father's Son. This idea has been kicking around in my head since The Last Jedi came out, and while like the This Ain't A Scene vid most of the grunt work is done it is much more rhythmically and thematically challenging. I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about it but don't have the brain space to type them all out tonight.
These 3 vids would also complete a line bingo on my
vid_bingo card (horizontal center, filling the alternative, vidder's choice, and chosen one prompts).
Less Concrete Star Wars Vid Ideas:
- A pan-saga vid to History Repeating. It just really fits thematically.
- A fluffy friendship vid set to Stuck In The Middle With You by Stealers Wheel.
- I saw a B5 ensemble vid to The Show Must Go On by Queen and I think it would fit very well for Star Wars as well.
For me, vidding is very vibes-based. A lot of these less-concrete ideas have overlapping vibes, so once a particular vibe has been accomplished I doubt I'll feel like rehashing it again for a while.
Black Sails Vid Ideas:
I haven't actually rewatched Black Sails in quite a while, and to get any of these done I would have to start clipping from scratch as a whole bunch of the clips I've made got badly corrupted, so these are further on the backburner because they require all the boring grunt work. Also, certain segments of the fandom kind of turned me off of it for a while, which massively lowered my enthusiasm for vidding it.
Concrete Ideas:
- I've wanted to make a crack vid to The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything from VeggieTales for a very long time. Flint would be Pa Grape, Billy would be Mr. Lundt, and Silver would be Larry.
- On the non-crack and extremely angsty front, a Flint/Thomas/Miranda vid set to Big God by Florence + The Machine. It would really be a Flint character study focusing on Flint's grief, rage, and obsession. I have really complicated feelings about Flint that are hard to put into words, especially about how he's really only capable of caring about 1-2 people at a time as actual people.
- An angsty Silver/Flint vid to Love Love Love by Of Monster And Men. The lyrics speak for themselves:
Well, maybe I'm a crook for stealing your heart awayYeah, maybe I'm a crook for not caring for itYeah, maybe I'm a bad, bad, bad, bad personWell, baby I know
- My newest vid bunny, in searching for a song to make a Max/Anne vid to, is actually somewhere between a Max/Eleanor breakup vid and a Max character study/manifesto to Cher's Believe. Yes, it's a cheesy, cliche song, but I think it will work great an examination of Max's character arc.
Less Concrete:
- A non-shippy vid to Doomtree's The Grand Experiment. I'm kind of 50/50 on how well this one would work. Some verses fit the show really well, other do not.
- A Billy character study to Lose Your Soul by Dead Man's Bones. This one is also iffy, the song is all chorus basically, which I noted above does not work that well for me. It might be an interesting vessel to explore using canon dialogue/audio in.
- I really want to make a Max/Anne vid because I love that ship so much (and I am normally a pretty indifferent shipper!), but I have yet to find a song that really speaks to me. The few ideas I've had are really just songs I like in general that I'm trying to force the ship to fit...
Babylon 5 Vid Ideas:
I love B5, it was the fandom that first inspired me to vid, there is just so much canon to sift through. Lots of pre-work, very daunting, but less depressing than Black Sails.
Concrete Ideas:
- A Londo/G'Kar vid to Lana Del Rey's cover of Once Upon A Dream from Maleficent. The role that visions and prophetic dreams play in their relationship makes it a *chef's kiss* kind of fit.
I know you, I walked with you once upon a dreamI know you, that look in your eyes is so familiar a gleamAnd I know it's true that visions are seldom all they seem...
- An Ivanova vid to Sorrow by The National. Once again, the lyrics speak for themselves and Ivanova's character arc fills me with so much sadness.
- A Bester & Garibaldi (or Bester/Garibaldi, whatever floats your boat) vid to You Can Call Me Al by Paul Simon. This has been a longstanding vid idea for me, but I think I'll need to edit out the last verse and probably a large chunk of the long instrumental section towards the end somehow? This is another one where there's enough vibes that fit, but some of the verses don't fit as well as others. Also, I mostly have listened to the song on Youtube and there are at least two different versions of it.
Less Concrete:
- An ensemble vid to Hey Brother by Avicii.
- I have vague thoughts of a Delenn-centric vid to Hope In The Air by Laura Marling (in case it isn't obvious, a lot of my vid ideas come from lyrics gifsets that were popular during my years on Tumblr.)
- One of the frontrunners for
vid_bingo's Same Song project is Level Up by Vienna Teng, and I think I could make either an ensemble vid or a Lyta-centric vid to it.

Date: 2022-11-11 08:05 pm (UTC)My vid bunnies are very vibe-based ones as well. I found vexercises a great way to get out some of my vibe vids where the entire song didn't necessarily fit or there wasn't enough footage to carry a full song (Enfys Nest, for example).
Your Luke idea sounds AMAZING! Several of these sound amazing. Like Lyta for Level up! OMG, yes please
:D :D
Whatever you end up doing next, I hope you enjoy making it!

Date: 2022-11-12 01:48 am (UTC)I also want to do an homage to droids vid, but I don't have even an inkling of a song for it, lol.
I had never heard Level Up before listening to all the songs for the vid bingo poll, but it fits Lyta so well, to the point where I might make the vid anyways even if it doesn't win the poll!
