Comment below and I'll ask you five questions. Answer them in your own journal, offer to give the first five commenters their own sets of questions, and let the cycle continue!

Questions from [personal profile] muccamukk

1. What's one thing you'd wished you'd known about vidding when you started?

Canon shots/visual beats are almost always significantly longer than the lyrical beat you're trying to match them to. Sometimes this can be worked around by playing with speeds or fancy cutting, but its best to have some thematically-similar backup shot ideas for those keystone moments. And sometimes a scene that really matters to the canon narrative and even inspired the vid doesn't have the correct visuals to work either.

Also, while there are good options out there not all free editing software is equal and the responsiveness of the software matters.

2. If you could change one small detail in Babylon 5, what one would you change?

In season 5 "The Ragged Edge", Garibaldi tries to confront Bester, finds out about the neural block preventing him from killing Bester, goes to talk to Franklin about it, gets caught up in the telepath hostage situation, and almost gets executed. At the end of the episode, Franklin is ostensibly trying to find him and talks to Sheridan about how weird Garibaldi was acting even before the hostage situation and asking him questions about neural blocks... and apparently nobody ever succeeds in tracking Garibaldi down to check on him or follow up about why he was asking about telepathic neural blocks, even though he's just getting drunk in his own quarters.

It has always bugged me. Garibaldi falling off the wagon makes narrative sense, but I would have liked to see more of his friends suspecting that something deeper was wrong. Especially from Franklin, I think it would have been a nice mirror to Garibaldi trying to help Franklin with his stim addiction.

3. What H/C trope are you just tired of?

I feel so out of touch with what people like these days I don't even know what tropes are still popular. I don't know if it counts as a trope in and of itself, but Character A having excruciatingly low self-esteem and getting together with Character B who acts more like their therapist than their romantic partner (except for the sex, of course!) and constantly has to tell them how awesome they really are is a big old nope for me. Especially if Character A doesn't actually have much of a self-esteem issue in canon.

4. What's your favourite Star Wars theme music? Do you remember when you first heard it?

It's impossible for me to pick just one, so you're getting top 3:
  1. Binary Sunset - I don't remember exactly when I first heard it, but I was definitely under the age of 7. It's so beautiful and so iconic.
  2. Duel of the Fates - I first heard it as a 7 year old watching TPM in theaters... for a long time I was convinced that the nonsense chanting lyrics were me mishearing Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's names on repeat.
  3. The entirety of the Rogue One soundtrack.

5. What historical fashion choice do you wish would come back?

Poofy swordsman sleeves with waistcoats, medieval-style kirtle dresses, and I am personally doing my best to actively bring hair taping back into style, if we're including hairstyles as fashion. Capes are also so fun and swishy, but so impractical.

So agreed on Michael's friends network just fucking vanishing on him. I realise there were a lot of fate of the galaxy crisis events happening right then, but the man had a really hard year! He's at the very least Stephen's friend and probably John's too. I would have at least liked an in canon mention of WHY no one was checking in on him.

I can do the character with really low self esteem feels better about themself trope, but it has to be like... their own work at least in part, not the partner as therapist. I've often said that the fantasy there isn't that "Someday I'll find someone who sees some worth in me," It's "Someday I'll find someone who sees some worth in me and I'll believe them." But it has to hit the balance.

I really can't beat Binary Sunset. It's really one of those songs that are hard to imagine not being in my life.
